Thai Herbal Compress Massage (Luk Pra Kob) Explained
A Thai herbal compress, called Luk Pra Kob in Thai, is a cloth ball packed with herbs, steamed until hot, and then pressed and rolled along your body during a massage. The herbs usually include plai (a Thai relative of ginger), turmeric, lemongrass, kaffir lime and camphor, with a little salt. Many guests find the deep, moist warmth and the herbal scent very soothing for stiff muscles. At our shop it costs 500 THB for one hour.
It is one of the most traditional treatments on our menu, and one of the most fragrant. Here is what is inside, where it comes from and what happens during a session.
What Luk Pra Kob means
In Thai it is written ลูกประคบ, usually translated as "herbal compress ball" or "hot compress ball". The herbs are wrapped tightly in cloth so the therapist can hold the ball, press it and roll it.
The herbs inside
Recipes vary from maker to maker, and from region to region, but most compresses share a common core. These are the herbs you will most often find:
- Plai (Zingiber cassumunar), a ginger relative often called the star of Thai herbal medicine. It is traditionally used for aches and stiff joints.
- Turmeric, which gives the compress its yellow colour.
- Lemongrass, for its fresh, citrus scent.
- Kaffir lime, the peel and sometimes the leaves.
- Tamarind leaves, common in many traditional recipes.
- Camphor, which gives the compress its strong, clean, cooling smell.
- Salt, which helps the compress hold its heat.
Some recipes also add galangal, ginger, pandan or borneol. The uses described above are traditional ones. We share them because they are part of the story, not as medical promises.
Where the tradition comes from
Herbal compresses are a long-standing part of traditional Thai healthcare, used alongside massage. When UNESCO added Nuad Thai, traditional Thai massage, to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019, the listing mentioned therapists using herbal hot compresses together with their hands, elbows, knees and feet. You can read the decision on the UNESCO website.
Many of the same plants, like lemongrass, turmeric, ginger and kaffir lime, are also everyday ingredients in Thai cooking, so the smell of a compress feels very familiar here in the north.
What to expect during the massage
- The compress is steamed. The herb balls are heated with steam until hot and fragrant.
- A heat check. The heat is tested before the compress touches you, and the first presses are quick and light so you can get used to it.
- Pressing and rolling. The warm compress is pressed in a rhythm along your back, shoulders, arms and legs, and rolled over tight areas.
- Massage in between. The compress is combined with massage by hand, so you get both the warmth and the pressure.
- Rest and water. At the end you rest for a moment, and we serve you water.
The heat should feel deep and comforting, never burning. Tell your therapist straight away if it feels too hot, and they will let it cool or press more lightly. Our therapists check the pressure with you throughout.
Who it suits
Many guests choose a herbal compress when they:
- feel stiff or achy, for example after hiking or a long journey,
- want something warmer and more aromatic than a dry Thai massage,
- like the idea of a very traditional Thai treatment.
It may not be the best choice if you have sensitive skin, a sunburn, a skin condition, or a strong dislike of herbal smells, because turmeric and camphor are quite strong. Turmeric can also stain fabric yellow, so it is best not to wear your favourite light-coloured clothes.
Please see a doctor before booking if you have an injury, are pregnant, have had recent surgery, or have blood-pressure or heart problems, and tell your therapist before you start.
